Date and Nut Recipes for Men, Minus the Aphrodisiac Myth

Most aphrodisiac products have thin evidence behind them. A 2015 review in Sexual Medicine Reviews looked at about 50 articles on the aphrodisiac products most used in the United States and concluded that future randomized clinical trials are warranted before health care practitioners can recommend most aphrodisiac products. Its abstract does not mention dates at all. So the recipes below make no promise about the bedroom. They are plain, filling food built around dates, three of them with nuts, and that is all they claim to be.
What the NHS actually points to
The NHS says that when men occasionally fail to get or keep an erection, it is usually caused by stress, tiredness or drinking too much alcohol. Its list of things that can help is about lifestyle, not any single food: lose weight if you’re overweight, stop smoking, eat a healthy diet, exercise daily and try to reduce stress and anxiety. It also says not to drink more than 14 units of alcohol a week. If erection problems keep happening, the NHS advice is to see a GP or a sexual health clinic, because it might be a sign of a health condition that can be treated.
“Eat a healthy diet” is the line where recipes fit in. Nothing more than that.
Date and walnut balls
Blend a cup of pitted dates with half a cup of walnuts and a tablespoon of cocoa powder until it clumps together, then roll into balls and chill for an hour. Dates are mostly sugar: USDA data for Medjool dates lists 66.5 g of total sugars per 100 g. Walnuts bring what dates lack, with 15.2 g of protein and 65.2 g of fat per 100 g in the USDA record for English walnuts. Keep the balls in the fridge.
Date and oat bowl
Soak three chopped dates in warm milk for ten minutes, then stir into a bowl of cooked oats with a spoon of honey and a handful of almonds on top. The dates sweeten the oats on their own, so you can cut the honey down or leave it out.
Dark chocolate and date bark
Melt dark chocolate, spread it thin on baking paper, press chopped dates and pistachios into it while soft, then chill until it snaps. Break it into small pieces. It is still a sweet, so treat it as one.
Grilled salmon with a date glaze
Simmer chopped dates with a splash of soy sauce and a squeeze of lime until it reduces to a thick glaze, then brush it over salmon fillets in the last few minutes of grilling. Salmon is the protein on this plate: the USDA record for raw farmed Atlantic salmon lists 20.4 g of protein and 13.4 g of fat per 100 g. The glaze replaces a bottled sweet sauce with something you made from three ingredients.
Which dates suit these recipes
Any soft date works. Mazafati, sold as rotab, is dark and very soft with high moisture, which is what you want for balls and a glaze. It needs refrigeration, and because it is cold-stored it is sold year-round. For a gentler, one-page version of the same idea, see our three easy date recipes.
The honest takeaway
No single food is a fix. The NHS list (healthy weight, no smoking, a healthy diet, daily exercise, less stress, sensible alcohol) is the advice with a source behind it, and dates and nuts are simply one tasty way to cover the “healthy diet” part.
