Juice For Fasting – Best Foods To Eat Following A Juice Fast

Dates and fruit set out to break a period of fasting

Why the first meal back matters

After a stretch of only liquids, the stomach has had nothing to digest for a while. Going straight back to a heavy, greasy plate — fried food, a big steak, a rich curry — tends to sit badly and can leave you feeling worse than the fast itself. The usual advice from people who do this regularly is the same one used for breaking any long fast: start small, start soft, and build up over the next meal or two rather than the next five minutes.

Start with something soft and simple

A piece of fruit, a small bowl of soup, or a few dates are the standard first bite. Dates in particular are a familiar choice here — they’re the traditional food used to break the daily fast during Ramadan, eaten before anything else at the table, precisely because they’re easy to eat after hours without food and don’t require much chewing or digesting effort. Two or three dates, then wait ten to fifteen minutes before eating more.

Move to whole foods gradually

Once the first small bite has settled, a light meal works better than a full plate: steamed vegetables, a small portion of rice or oats, or a simple soup with some protein in it. Save the heavier, richer foods — fried dishes, red meat, anything very spicy or very sweet — for the next day rather than the first meal back.

Chew slowly and stop before full

Eating fast after a period of not eating is the most common way people end up with stomach discomfort. Smaller bites, more chewing, and stopping at “comfortable” rather than “full” gives the stomach time to catch up. If something doesn’t sit right, it usually settles faster if you stop eating for a bit rather than pushing through.

A simple order to follow

Dates or fruit first, a light meal an hour or so later, then back to a normal plate the next day. It’s the same order used at an iftar table during Ramadan — dates and water, then a light starter, then the main meal — and it works for the same reason: it eases the stomach back into regular eating instead of shocking it.

Keep a box of kurma on hand if you’re planning to break a fast this way — they store well at room temperature and don’t need any preparation. Our kurma nutrition guide covers what’s actually in a date if you want the specifics.
